Coloured Diamonds and Gemstones Dominate Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels Auction

With coloured diamonds and gemstones receiving so much of the spotlight, it’s not hard to imagine why Canadian retailer Birks are expecting a high price for the 10.02 ct., SI1 fancy light-purplish pink diamond it is planning to sell through its Edmonton store. The diamond originated from a rough stone of 21.35 ct. that was recovered in South Africa, and which took more than three months to cut and polish. Birks is estimating that the pink diamond could end up selling for more than US$2.5 million.
